TheMomLists_CanadianAuthors.jpg

In honour of Canada Day, we’ve rounded up 12 of our favourite books written by Canadian authors. There are definitely some childhood classics in here that you probably grew up reading and have possibly forgotten about ... but we’re here to remind you of these Canadian written books, so you can share them with your little ones! We also made sure to add some new and up and coming Canadian authors and illustrators. So here it is: 12 Books Written by Canadian Authors that we love:

You Can Read
by Helaine Becker 🇨🇦
Illustrated by Mark Hoffman

A fun and funny celebration of literacy. It turns out you can read everywhere! And when you do, you open yourself to a universe of adventure.

My Hair
by Danielle Murrell Cox 🇨🇦

A bold and colourful board book by graphic designer. It is written in simple text to describe beautiful hairstyles.

A is for Alphabet
by Jessie Thiessen 🇨🇦

A brilliantly illustrated alphabet, full of fun alliterations and adorable characters. Each page is frame-worthy.

Red is Best
by Kathy Stinson 🇨🇦
illustrated by Robin Baird Lewis 🇨🇦

This was my childhood book. My dad used to read it to me every night. Now it is one my son’s favourites. It’s one of those recite-from memory books for me!

Along a Long Road
by Frank Viva 🇨🇦

Follow this very well-designed road! Ride along on an eventful bicycle ride, along the bold yellow road that weaves through the town, by the sea and through the country. A beautiful adventure!

Grumpy Bird
by Jeremy Tankard 🇨🇦

Another favourite in our house. Silly and simple, Bird wakes up grumpy. Too grumpy to eat, play―or even fly. His friends, one at a time begin to walk alongside him, keeping him company and somewhere along the way Bird realizes he’s not grumpy anymore! … and if you love this one, there are two other books in the series!

How To
by Julie Morstad 🇨🇦

A cute and creative ‘how to’ book explores whimsical ways of doing a ray of everyday tasks, including ‘how to wonder’,  ‘how to see the breeze’, and ‘how to be brave’. It may not be the way you thought or maybe it is? What other ways can you do it?

The Dot
by Peter H. Reynolds 🇨🇦

"Just make a mark and see where it takes you" these words lead stubborn little Vashti, who “can’t draw” on an inspiring journey of surprise, creativity, and self-discovery. I used to read this in every art class I taught!

Tokyo Digs A Garden
by Jon-Erik Lappano 🇨🇦
Illustrated by Kellen Hatanaka 🇨🇦

Tokyo lives in a small house between giant buildings and highways where there once were hills and trees. Tokyo plants a few seeds and they grow into a forest so lush and gorgeous (the illustrations prove this!) that takes over the entire city overnight. A thoughtful and inspiring story with a big theme of environmentalism.

Jillian Jiggs
by Phoebe Gillman 🇨🇦

Jillian Jiggs a ball of energy and a wild imagination, no one can keep up. How can she take time to clean up her room when there are so many wonderful things to make and do? This book is a childhood favourite and was so loved by all that many more Jillian Jiggs stories were written to complete this series.

Love You Forever
by Robert Munsch 🇨🇦
illustrated by Sheila McGraw 🇨🇦

If you haven’t read this book, you are seriously missing out! This classic deserves to be on every child’s bookshelf… there is something about this story that gives every child and parent all the feels.
"I'll love you forever
I'll like you for always
As long as I'm living
My baby you'll be."

Alligator Pie
by Dennis Lee 🇨🇦
Illustrated by Sandy Nichols 🇨🇦

You may recognize the name of this classic book (there was even a song to go with it) but this is a newly illustrated board book version of the classic (remember that bright coloured hot air balloon with an alligator hanging out of it?) An iconic poem by "Canada's Father Goose".
