18 Books Celebrating Pride Month! LGBTQ+ - Love - Gender - Identity - Inclusion

June is Pride Month. We are celebrating by sharing some of our favourite books (and some new books we are excited for) about the LGBTQ+ community, love, gender, identity, and inclusion. It is never too early to start reading about these important topics.

No matter what your family looks like, books about pride, diverse families and gender identities, and inclusion can teach kids positive messages about embracing difference, overcoming adversity, and just unconditional love and acceptance. By fourteen year old drag kid ‘Desmond is Amazing’ walks us through the history of the LGBTQ community, all while encouraging you to embrace your own uniqueness and ignore the haters. This book is super cute and do yourself a favour, and youtube Desmond’s read aloud.


BORN READY: THE TRUE STORY OF A BOY NAMED PENELOPE

Penelope knows that he’s a boy (…and a ninja!) The problem is getting everyone else to realize it. Written by a mother about her child. We love the message of this book - it always makes you stronger when you are true to yourself and who you really are. A really important book about identity and acceptance.

A lively rhyming alphabet book where a vibrant community helps a young child find their lost dog in the Pride parade! A joyful glimpse of a Pride parade. This book is great for young readers.

Being You: A First Conversation About Gender

Research shows that talking about issues like gender from a young age (as early as two) not only helps children understand what they see, but also increases self-awareness, self-esteem, and allows them to recognize and confront things that are unfair, like discrimination and prejudice.
